About the event

Dorothy Paige-Turner, educator, performing artist, historian, author, playwright, and lecturer will present “Songs and Stories of the Underground Railroad and the History of the Juneteenth Holiday.” Through music, stories and poetry, her presentation will explore how secret and coded messages embedded within the spirituals and folk songs communicated various means of escape to the enslaved through the Underground Railroad before, during and after the Civil War.

The Emancipation Proclamation led to the celebration of Juneteenth

(National Freedom Day), which became a state and federal holiday in 2021.

Doors open at 6:00pm. First come-first served seating up to 50 people.No admission charge. Refreshments served.
